Day 10 – Chrysaora Quinquecirrha (Atlantic Sea Nettle) 🪼 Welcome to Day 10 of my Jellyfish Series! Today, we have the Atlantic Sea Nettle, scientifically known as Chrysaora Quinquecirrha. Not to be confused with Day 8’s Pacific Sea Nettle, this species looks very similar to others in its family, often leading to misidentifications across different seas. The Atlantic Sea Nettle has a painful sting for its prey, but for humans, it typically causes only an allergic reaction and is not fatal. This was an exciting one to paint, especially with the introduction of a new colour into the series! The central mass of tentacles was a challenge to capture, and while it didn’t turn out exactly as I envisioned, I’m still really happy with how this piece came together! 💬 What do you think? Day 9: The Purple Striped Sea Nettle 🪼💜 Welcome to Day 9 of my Jellyfish Series! 🎨 Today’s jelly is the Chrysaora Colorata, also known as the Purple Striped Sea Nettle—named after the beautiful purple stripes that decorate its bell. 🌊 Found primarily along the California coast, from Bodega Bay to San Diego, juveniles start off pale pink with deep maroon tentacles before developing their signature look. But don’t be fooled by its beauty—this jelly delivers a seriously painful sting! ⚡️ However, it’s also an important part of the ocean’s ecosystem, serving as a food source for leatherback turtles due to its high carbon and nitrogen content. Day 8: The Pacific Sea Nettle 🪼✨ Welcome to Day 8 of my Jellyfish Series! 🎨 Today’s star is the Chrysaora Fuscescens, more commonly known as the Pacific Sea Nettle—a striking jellyfish with a bright yellow bell and red to pale yellow tentacles. 🌊 Like many carnivorous jellies, it uses its long, flowing tentacles as a net to catch prey, delivering toxins to stun its next meal. This was such a beautiful jellyfish to paint, but I definitely struggled to balance the dark shadows while keeping the transparency just right. Day 7: The Australian Spotted Jellyfish 🎨✨ Welcome to Day 7 of my Jellyfish Series! 🪼 Today, we’re revisiting the Phyllorhiza punctata, but this time, it’s the Australian Spotted Jellyfish—a subspecies native to Australia. Just like its relative, it has mild venom and poses no real threat to humans, with its sting easily treated with diluted vinegar. This has to be one of my favourites so far—I’m so happy with the transparency and softness I achieved using watercolours! 🎨💙 🌊 How do you think this one compares to the first spotted jellyfish? Day 6: The Golden Jellyfish ✨ Welcome to Day 6 of my Jellyfish Series! Today, we’re diving into the world of the Mastigias papua etpisoni, better known as the Golden Jellyfish. A subspecies of the spotted jellyfish, these beauties have evolved with fewer spots and a near-complete loss of their club-like tentacle extensions. 🌊💛 Found in the western Pacific Ocean, their numbers are rapidly declining, with Jellyfish Lake in Palau being one of the few places they remain. Day 5 – The Spotted Jellyfish 🪼 Welcome to Day 5 of my Jellyfish Series! Today’s jelly is the Mastigias papua, also known as the Spotted Jelly, Lagoon Jelly, Golden Medusa, or Papuan Jellyfish. 🌊 Found in the Indo-Pacific oceans, this jelly is easily recognized by the distinctive spots on its bell, which range in colour from greenish-blue to olive green. Unlike many other jellies, the Spotted Jellyfish has multiple mouths along the bottom of its eight frilled oral arms, which extend into club-like appendages.
